Connecticut Children’s Office for Community Child Health promotes optimal health, development and well-being for all children. In doing so, the Office addresses a variety of issues impacting outcomes, including obesity prevention.

Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years and disproportionately affects low income, black and Latino children. Obese children are at increased risk for chronic health problems. Such problems include heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, asthma and mental health disorders.

One example of our work in this area involves the Start Childhood Off Right (SCOR) program. SCOR is creating a comprehensive system of support for families. Its goal is to decrease obesity in Hartford children by five percent by promoting healthy nutrition and physical activity from birth to age 2. By starting children off on a healthy path, the hope is that such habits will continue throughout childhood and into the adult years.
